Squirrel Class

Year 1

🌟 Welcome to Year 1! 🌟

We’re so excited to welcome you to our Year 1 class! This year marks an exciting transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage into Key Stage 1, and we’re here to make that journey joyful, engaging, and full of discovery.

A Message from the Year 1 Team

In Year 1, we create a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where every child feels valued, confident, and ready to learn. We build strong relationships with our pupils and families and believe that working together is key to helping each child thrive.

This year, your child will grow as a reader, writer, mathematician, scientist, and so much more! But just as importantly, they will grow in confidence, independence, and resilience.

What We’re Learning

Our curriculum is rich, broad, and full of opportunities to explore and ask questions. Each half term, our learning is shaped around exciting topics and high-quality books that inspire curiosity and creativity. Some of the areas we’ll explore include:

  • Phonics & Early Reading using Read Write Inc. Phonics

  • Writing inspired by picture books, storytelling, and real-life experiences

  • Maths focusing on number fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning

  • Science with hands-on investigations and exploring the world around us

  • Art & DT through drawing, making, and experimenting with materials

  • History & Geography as we start to look at the world and our place in it

  • RE following the Kapow scheme, encouraging thoughtful and respectful discussion

  • PSHE to support friendships, feelings, and wellbeing

We also build in opportunities to learn outdoors, be creative, and follow the children’s interests.

Communication

Communication between school and home is important and valued.  If you need to let me know anything you can tell me at drop-off and pick-up times, send a message via ClassDojo or email the office and they will pass the email onto me.  Please allow 48 hours for me to respond to emails.  For all urgent messages or enquiries please call the school office on 01235 813304.
