Introduction to the Curriculum

An Introduction to the Curriculum at Willowcroft Community School 2017-2018

At Willowcroft we strive to provide children with a curriculum that has a wide variety of content and an appropriate depth of learning. It ensures that a firsthand experience and the use of prior knowledge is the priority. Through subject theme work and the statutory subjects of English, Maths, Science, ICT, Physical Education and Religious Education we aim to engage our children and give them the tools for success in their future in modern British life. We constantly review and reinforce a broad range of teaching strategies that foster focus and guide potential.

We enable our pupils to succeed through challenging tasks and activities that encourage them to take risks. We develop their ability to think independently, enabling them to transfer their learning to all aspects of their life; preparing them for the future. We actively teach the skills needed to be a successful learner and reward these regularly.

Through Whole School topics we aim to include every child, no matter their ability or background, and ensure that these topics are not only engaging for the children as they learn from first hand experiences but memorable too.

Term 3

When I grow up...

Whole school topic

This term's topic was aimed at providing higher aspirations for the children in our school, with our Growth Mindset House Point focus being 'Courage and Bravery' it's task was to inspire children to 'step out of their comfort zone' and embrace the idea that hard work really does pay off.

This term we have had lots of visitors to our school who have been talking to us about their jobs. We would like to say a HUGE thank you to Charlene, Leon, Mitt, Mrs Newman, Penny, The Red team from Didcot Fire station, Julia and Stuart.

On Friday 9th February a very brave group of children stood up in front of the whole school and showed us exactly what they are made of. We had some children who walked off mid-way but came fighting back with another performance once they had gathered their nerves, it takes true Courage and Bravery to stand up on a stage and say ‘this is me.’ A huge congratulations to all of those who took part and a big thank you to the School Council for running the entire show! On behalf of every adult at Willowcroft, we would like to say ‘Well done, you smashed it!’
